Innovations in Packaging to Reduce Plastic Waste

Bermar produce wine preservation systems that allow hotels, restaurants and bars to sell wine by the glass through their innovative 21-day preservation technology. Their ePreserve chip allows hospitality professionals to remove the oxygen in a wine bottle to a precisely controlled level. This creates a vacuum in the product that is subtle enough to preserve the wine’s subtle structure. Bermar’s system also preserves sparkling wine by injecting CO2 into a sparkling wine bottle, thereby balancing the pressure and presenting any escape of CO2 from the wine itself. A stopper is then added to lock in the fizz.

Bermar’s Requirements

The purpose of Bermar’s product is to prevent wastage. The technology halts the oxidation of wine in open bottles which drastically reduces the amount of wine that hospitality staff need to throw away. According to Bermar, UK restaurants are responsible for the production of 915,400 tonnes of waste every year and, on average, 3.1 million glasses of wine are disposed of annually. With Bermar’s vision being to reduce wastage in the hospitality industry, their clients should feel that they are making a positive difference when they receive their new Bermar system. However, the packaging that protected Bermar’s products on the way to their clients involved a great deal of plastics, foam and other polymers.

As a high-value and heavy product, the importance of protecting the product en route meant that Bermar’s packaging was creating waste and undoing the positive impact that their product was having. In addition to the environmental impact of their packaging, the combination of plastics was not cost-effective and overall was causing a problem for the brand.

Bermar’s clients include Taittinger, Harrods and The Savoy Hotel. These luxury brands understandably expect optimum quality at all times and so it was crucial to Bermar that their product arrived in perfect condition.

Our Support

We were asked by the team at Bermar to design new packaging for them which was more cost-effective and environmentally friendlier.  Our design team developed an innovative solution which dealt with multiple versions of their product and eliminated the need for plastics, foam or other polymers when shipping high value, heavy products to Bermar’s customers.
